The Agriculture Committee of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) approved in 2016 the Bolivian proposal to declare Bolivia a 2018 as International Year of Camelids. Camelids are the main means of subsistence for millions of families living in the most hostile environments in some 90 countries around the world.

These animals are essential for food security and nutrition as they are the main source of protein for indigenous communities in different regions of the world. They also provide fibre, organic fertiliser, draught power and transport and are indispensable for nomadic pastoralist livelihoods. This recognises the key role of these animals climate change impacts, in particular in arid and semi-arid lands, in addition to the promotion and support of products and services they provide (of vital importance to the livelihoods of the communities that depend on them).

To mark the occasion, the University of Seville together with the company African Airs are organising the "A day among camelids".
